ACF Regionals 2008

ACF Regionals will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2008. A full announcement, including packet guidelines, will be posted when the fall semester starts. Right now, I just wanted to claim the date, explain some intentions for this tournament, and open up the bidding process for hosts.

Regionals this year will display a SIGNIFICANT drop in difficulty from the past few years. While it will not be quite as easy as ACF Fall, it will be emblematic of "regular difficulty" in quizbowl rather than any hypothetical "Regionals difficulty." It may compare roughly in difficulty and style to Penn Bowl 2007. With that in mind, coupled with an initiative to get teams who only played College Bowl or Honda in the past to attend this tournament, I hope to see hosts and teams display interest in regions which did not have ACF Regionals sites in 2007, as well as in the traditional locations.

Hosts will be able to keep $70 per team before awarding buzzer, staff, and travel discounts. This is a little more than in past years; in return, hosts are expected to award prizes to the top finishing overall teams, undergraduate teams, and Division II teams as well as to a certain number of individual all-stars, and to use pre-determined tournament formats sent out by the editors for each possible field size.

If the above sounds appealing to you, please contact me at weinerm@vcu.edu in order to nominate your club as a possible Regionals host. I hope to have enough bids by August to put out a full list of hosts as part of the complete tournament announcement in the fall.
